Why Captions Don't Get Engagement: Your Caption Is Being Too Polite
Find out why captions don't get engagement, from sleepy hooks to calls to action that ask strangers to write a memoir before lunch.
The caption is too detached from the video
A lot of captions don't get engagement because the video and caption feel like they were introduced in the elevator five seconds ago. The video has a point. The caption is over by the snacks talking about something else.
Make the first caption line finish the video hook. If the video asks a question, the caption should answer it, sharpen it, or pick a side. Do not make the viewer connect the dots like this is detective night.
The call to action asks for too much
If your caption asks viewers to explain their entire strategy in the comments, you didn't ask for engagement, you assigned homework. People opened the app for a tiny break, not to cite sources.
Ask something they can answer fast: "save or skip?", "which one fits your niche?", or "comment the word you want rewritten." You can earn the big thoughtful replies later, after you stop making everyone feel like there will be a quiz.
The caption refuses to have an opinion
Neutral captions are easy to agree with and even easier to forget. They are the caption version of "just checking in." Nobody is angry. Nobody is moved. Everyone keeps walking.
Give people something to react to: "Most captions fail because they ask for engagement before earning attention." Now there is a take. A take gives people a handle. Without a handle, they scroll past like your post was background furniture.
